Artist Overview

I am a geek from a family of nerds. As a child, I would often have trouble paying attention in class because my imagination was constructing something more interesting. Now imagining things is what I'm supposed to do. I earned a B.F.A. in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design, followed up with an M.F.A. from Savannah College of Art and Design, and have been working in Atlanta as a designer and illustrator since then. While I always have more and more things I want to paint, I'm open to commissions and connections.
Visually my artwork focuses on color, shapes, lines, and patterns; thematically it focuses on childhood, dreamscapes, and whimsy. I often find inspiration in the forms of the world around me, in floor tiles, coffee stains, shadows on fabric – any of these things could become creatures in my sketchbook. I also take inspiration from German expressionism, Aztec art, Inuit art, surrealism, and metaphor.
I work in acrylic, on illustration board or canvas. I plan out my pieces digitally, because it is important to me to find my color palette before I ever touch brush to paper. Once I am painting, however, I like to remain open to the spontaneous decisions that arise throughout the process.
I make art because sometimes there are things I see that other people do not, and I want them to. A universe of widely diverse sources has passed through the lens of my understanding and my misunderstanding, my dreams and my neuroses, onto the canvas, and it is my hope that others will find the result amusing or curious or at least pleasant to look upon.
